We are all aware of the huge amount of damage property can sustain from a tornado. Naturally, the amount of damage will depend on the severity of the storm but, even a less severe tornado can do a great deal of damage that might not be evident at first glance. Here are a few areas that should be inspected after a tornado:
The roof is usually the area that will sustain the most damage. In such a case it’s important to have it repaired quickly to prevent further issues like water intrusion and mold.
The chimney is another area that should be inspected after a tornado. A damaged chimney could create a dangerous build-up of carbon monoxide inside the house so even if it looks ok you should still have it looked at.
The plumbing system can sustain damage when a tornado rattles the structure of a home. Turn on all the faucets in the house and check for any water leaking. Look under sinks and cabinets, etc. for water leaks as well.
The home should also be inspected for signs that the floors or walls have shifted. A level may help you to check this. Look for any stress cracks that may have appeared after the tornado, particularly where the wall meets the ceiling.
Trees frequently uproot in a tornado which could disrupt gas lines. Before you turn the gas back on in your home, you will want to check this has not happened in your area.
Look in the home’s crawlspaces (if safe to do so) and masonry areas. If you notice any damage, it could mean that the foundation of the building has been compromised.
A safe home is of the utmost importance so, if your home has been in a storm, have it inspected and find out if it has been compromised in any way.
