Among the numerous problems that can arise on our properties, sinkholes are probably not that high on our list.  However, sinkholes have the potential to cause huge amounts of destruction, not only to roads and property, but to human life as well.  It’s a good idea, then, to be aware of some of the warning signs that a sinkhole may be forming either on or around your property.

What signs might you notice inside a home that indicate a sinkhole could be forming?  Cracks might start appearing in the floors and walls of the home.  Doors and windows could become difficult to open and close.  If you use well water, you might observe it becoming muddy or cloudy.

Now what about around the property, what warning indicators could you start to see?  There is a range of possible sinkhole warnings, some being very obvious, while others are subtler.  Some obvious signs are cracks developing in the ground in circular patterns, sudden openings in the ground and rapid ground subsidence.  Then there are the subtler signs.  These would be water accumulating in pools in places that have never experienced this issue previously.  You might notice certain areas where plant life has died off, this could be due to a sinkhole draining away the plants water source.  Trees or fences could start listing or expose areas that are usually under the soil.

Yes, these are all potential signs that a sinkhole is forming near you, however, they may also indicate other issues with your property that are not related to a sinkhole.  If you have noticed some of these signs in or around your home, its best to have a professional perform an inspection for you, to determine the real cause of the problem.
