Anyone who has had to move house will agree that its rather high on the list of stressful things to do, this is particularly the case if you haven’t moved in many years and have had time, and space, to accumulate many possessions.  If you are planning on moving to a new house in the near future, what can you do to make the move easier and less stressful?

One key to an easy move is simplifying.  Yes, having less to move will, no doubt, make things easier, but what are some of the ways you can simplify ahead of time?  Don’t look at this as a huge, impossible task, start with small jobs.  When going through your possessions like clothing for example, sort them into piles, one pile of things you will keep, one pile of things to donate and another pile for a yard sale.  When trying to decide what to keep, ask yourself when the last time was that you wore it or used it.  If it has been longer than a year, its likely you will never wear it.

There are household items, however, that can neither be thrown away or donated.  Things like old electronics, batteries, old paint cans and chemicals etc. need to be disposed of in the right way.  Call your local environmental agency if you are not sure of where to take them and they will advise you.  If you do this way in advance of moving, you will be far more likely to get rid of these items in the correct manner and not put them in the garbage.

While its clear to see the many benefits of simplifying your possessions ahead of time, an added advantage is that you will also be helping to protect the environment.  This is because you will be reducing waste and disposing of things in the proper way.  It will also be much easier to unpack when you reach your new home.
