Many homeowners nowadays are taking extra measures to keep themselves safe from intruders. One way of doing this is with window bars, also called security bars. These are metal bars that are installed on the outside of a window, generally the lower floors or basement windows of the house. These are used to prevent burglars from coming in through windows.
This can be an effective way to stop intruders from entering a house, which, in turn offers a sense of security for the people who live there. But, there are also some disadvantages to window bars. For example, the resident might not be able to escape out of these windows in case of a fire in the building. Window bars could also block vital entry points for firefighters.
If certain windows in the home are needed as emergency exists, it would be better if they did not have safety bars, however, if they must have them, make sure they are equipped with a quick release mechanism. This should be easy to access by anyone inside the home. This mechanism should also be very easy to use and not need a key or special tool in order to open it. The reason for this is because in the event of an emergency, such as a fire, a person can very easily become panicked and disorientated, in which case, valuable time could be lost if the mechanism is difficult to open. A good question to ask yourself is “would a child or elderly person be able to easily open this kind of mechanism?”
So, it’s clear to see, window bars can be a useful deterrent against intruders but, if they do not have a easy to use quick release mechanism, they could become very dangerous in the event of a fire
